Upper Rock Nature Reserve of Gibraltar
Gibraltar is home to many diverse plants and animals that can only be found in this geographical area; one of these is the free roaming Barbary Macaques apes living at the Upper Rock Nature Reserve, some 1400 feet above the ocean. The apes are not the only protected species living at this altitude, there are a number of hawks, eagles and other birds of prey that live here, protected by the government. St. Michael’s Caves are also a big attraction due to the fantastic underground formations. The view from the top of the Upper Rock Nature Reserve is well worth the climb it takes to reach the summit and the photographic opportunities fantastic. This is a climb for experienced hikers who are in shape.
